Waimea
Canyon
Mark Twain called
Waimea Canynon the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific"
and it is one of Kauai's natural wonders. Eroded by
water, wind and rain, Waimea Canyon is the largest canyon
in the Pacific measuring 10 miles long, 2 mile wide
and over 3,500 feet deep. Like the Grand Canyon, the
lines along the canyon's walls indicate the different
volcanic eruptions and lava flows that have occurred
over the centuries.
The best time to
see the canyon, and the wondrous views from the Kalalau
Lookout, is in the morning, as clouds may move in around
the noon hour, often totally obscuring all views. Such
was the case on our very first visit to Waimea Canyon:
we never saw a thing.
Tip:
Before turning around
and going out of the Canyon, go to the end of the road
where you will find Kalalau Lookout for viewing both
Waimea Canyon and the Napali Coast.
