Kona-Kohala Coast

The 40-mile coastline of the sunny Kona-Kohala Coast has many important historical sites as well as the world's top resorts and the sunniest beaches such as Hapuna Beach, a beautiful stretch of white-sand beach with gentle rolling surf. Visit the King's Trail, an ancient path filled with petroglyphs, extending several miles to Puukohola Heiau, the last temple built during Kamehameha I's reign. The Kona-Kohala Coast has large lava fields extending from mauka (mountain) to makai (ocean).

Some of the world's most luxurious and renowned resorts on the Big Island are located on the Kona-Kohala Coast. For example:

  • Outrigger Fairway Villas
The Fairway Villas, the Big Island's newest luxury resort condominium, is opening with contemporary Hawaiian 2- and 3-bedroom villas in prestigious Waikoloa Beach Resort on ten gorgeous acres along the Big Island's Kohala Coast. A contemporary Hawaiian plantation design that blends a Hawaiian architectural theme with numerous luxurious features that include a private gated community, infinity pool with lap lane and elevated waterfall spa, poolside picnic area, including dining areas with gas barbecues and commercial ice machine. Granite kitchen and bathroom countertops, full-size washer and dryer, and jacuzzi soaking tubs in all master bedrooms.
  • Waikoloa Beach Marriott
Fronting one of Hawaii's most beautiful beaches, the Waikoloa Beach Marriott lies along the Big Island of Hawaii's sunny Kohala Coast, in the fabulous Waikoloa Beach Resort.
  • The Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel
On the Big Island of Hawaii, Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel is upbeat, breezy and dramatic. Sharing 1,839 acres of oceanfront paradise with the legendary Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel opened in 1994. The hotel is nestled into the bluffs above the #1-rated Hapuna Beach in a flowing, contemporary Hawaiian style. All 350 of its guestrooms are ocean-facing and radiate from an open-air lobby that provides sweeping views of the Kohala coastline.
  • The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel
The world-renowned Mauna Kea Beach Hotel is located on beautiful Kauna'oa Bay, considered by many to be the island's single most picturesque beach. Crescent-shaped with pure white sands and shimmering aqua waters, it is perfect for water activities including swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing, kayaking, catamaran riding, whale watching and deep-sea fishing. Even at night, guests step onto a circular lava outcropping overlooking the Bay, to watch the manta rays swim beneath. A testament to earlier times when his world-class resort paid tribute to the ancient Hawaiian spirit, Laurance Rockefeller's vast collection of Asian and Pacific art still graces the walls and lush tropical grounds. Over 1600 museum-quality pieces have been carefully preserved and displayed so that the unique culture of the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel will live on for generations to come.
  • Hilton Waikoloa Village
When the Hilton Waikoloa Village was built in 1988, there was nothing like it in Hawaii, let alone on the sunny Kohala coast. This 62-acre resort has everything. A main attraction is a 4-acre swimming and snorkeling lagoon and beach. One can glimpse colorful tropical fish and perhaps even a rare, green sea turtle. Here guests can be a part of an interactive program guided by Dolphin Quest. Portions of the Dolphin Quest fees are donated to the Pacific Marine Life Foundation to support vital marine education, research and conservation.
  • The Fairmont Orchid, Hawaii

For those who seek the ultimate in relaxation, try our 'Spa Without Walls,' oceanside massage, or sit back and watch the Kohala sunset from the vantage point of a swaying hammock.
  • Kona Village Resort
As dramatic as the setting sun, Kona Village Resort beckons with an enchanting beauty. Ancient people walked upon this land. Today, their legends remain as strong as the spirit of aloha. A few feet from the beach, a natural spring dedicated to the Hawaiian god Kane pours into the ocean. Fresh from the mountains, it brings life to Kona Village Resort and all who come its way. There are no phones in your room at Kona Village Resort. Nor are there TVs or radios to distract you. Instead, music is provided by the tradewinds and the sea. It is no wonder that those who experience this Polynesian oasis return again and again. To a special hammock. A favorite hale. A moment suspended in time. A sense of place...a retreat from today's changing world.
