Hiking along Hadrian's Wall

Dear Carole--

This was a hike that didn't happen. I had expected to go hiking along parts of Hadrian's Wall before going to Birmingham for a conference. Unfortunately, as you know, two weeks before I left for London, Britain suffered an outbreak of hoof-and-mouth disease and the government closed all the public footpaths in order to contain the spread of the disease.

I was disappointed, but you saved the day by quickly creating an itinerary that let me explore some small towns that I had never been to before. I really enjoyed the couple of days in Canterbury. What an amazing, vibrant, young-at-heart town it is! I'd like to go back again to Kent when the footpaths are open* so I can base-camp in Canterbury and explore the countryside. I also loved Warwick and its huge castle. The highlight of that part of the trip was to sit in the church there at evensong and listen to the local choir. I felt like I was in an Inspector Morse mystery.

Any way, thanks so much!
